Corten steel
We offer many of our Corten steel objects in two versions: raw or pre-rusted.
Corten steel, also known as weather steel or COR-TEN steel, is a type of steel alloy that has special properties that make it attractive for use in construction, architectural applications, and gardening and landscaping. Here are some of the distinctive properties of Corten steel:
Corrosion resistance: In contrast to conventional steel, Corten steel forms a protective rust layer that protects against further corrosion. This patina of rust acts as a natural barrier against environmental influences such as moisture, salt air and atmospheric conditions.
Weather resistance: Due to its ability to develop a stable rust layer, Corten steel is particularly suitable for use in outdoor applications. It withstands the effects of rain, snow, wind and sunlight for long periods of time without compromising its structural integrity.
Aesthetic Qualities: Corten steel's characteristic rust patina gives it a unique and attractive aesthetic. Many architects and designers appreciate the natural beauty and rustic charm of this material, which blends harmoniously into various environments.
Rusting process
The rusting process for Corten steel takes place in several steps:
Initial Reaction: When Corten steel is exposed to the environment, the rusting process begins. During the first few months, an orange-brown layer forms on the surface of the steel, known as the tarnishing phase. During this time, tones may vary and the patina may appear irregular.
Development of the patina: Over time, the rust layer develops into a stable, dense patina. This patina protects the underlying steel from further corrosion by providing a barrier to moisture and oxygen. The patina can take on various shades of brown, red, orange and purple depending on the environmental conditions and length of exposure to the elements.
Stabilization: After a few years, the patina reaches a certain stability and the rusting process slows down. At this point, the patina provides reliable protection against further corrosion and contributes to the longevity of the Corten steel.
Although Corten steel has natural corrosion resistance and requires little maintenance, it is advisable to occasionally clean the surface to remove any buildup of dirt, dust or organic materials. This helps keep the patina intact and preserve the aesthetic qualities of the material.
Accelerate the rusting process
Corten steel develops a rust patina more quickly when exposed to moisture. Placing Corten steel in environments with high humidity as well as regularly spraying or moistening the surface with water, including a little salt and/or vinegar, promotes the rusting process. However, caution should be exercised here for environmental reasons.
It goes without saying: When treating with salt/vinegar water, you should definitely not fill it with bird food. The feeding area must be rinsed thoroughly before filling.
It is important to note that the rusting process of Corten steel will still take some time even if it is accelerated.
