Notes on slate roofing VH-10
Slate is a natural product with a folded, parallel sedimentary structure. This structure enables good splitting, which means that relatively thin panels can be produced (see also splitting slate). The external shape of the roof and wall slate is obtained by cutting it to size.
The surface, thickness and edges therefore always have irregularities. This means that every slate is always different
These slate panels are attached to facades and roofs using slate nails on wooden substructures. To do this, the slate plates are perforated (not drilled). The upper side of the hole is relatively even, the lower side is always slightly broken due to the different structure of the slate.
With our VH-10 birdhouses, the slate is placed so that the side with the even hole edges is always on top.
First the slate is placed on the upper bars, then folded down. The slate gets stuck a bit, is relatively insensitive to wind, but can still be removed to fill the birdhouse.
If stronger, hurricane-like storms are forecast, we recommend temporarily securing or removing the slate with a rubber band.
